An Olympus Visionary since 2011, David Wells is a well-respected international publication photographer and photo educator.

Using Olympus cameras, his specialty is in-depth photo essays for publications and exhibitions that draw on his strengths at intercultural communications and the use of light and shadow to enhance visual narratives.

Wells is currently affiliated with Aurora Photos of Portland, Maine. He was previously affiliated with Matrix International and J.B. Pictures of New York City. Before becoming a freelance publication photographer, he was a staff photographer for the Syracuse Newspapers (Syracuse, NY) and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Fort Worth, TX) and was also a contract photographer for the Los Angeles Times. Between 1986 and 1996 he produced 16 photo essays for the Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine. In 1999, Wells was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship at Mysore University, India, where he spent five months working on his project on globalization’s impact on South Asia. Two subsequent fellowships, one from the Alicia Patterson Foundation in 2001 and a Fulbright Regional Studies Fellowship in 2005, enabled him to complete that project.

Wells’ work has been published as portfolios in American Photographer, Camera and Darkroom, Camera Arts, Communication Arts Photography Annual, Graphics: The Human Condition, Photo District News, Photo (France), Photographers International (Taiwan) and Zoom (Italy). David’s work has won awards from Pictures of the Year, the Sunday Magazine Editors Association, American Photographer, Society of Newspaper Design and SocialDocumentary.net. He was also recently honored by Photo District News as one of the best workshop instructors.

An Olympus pro for years, Wells lists the Olympus OM-D E-M5 as his favorite Olympus camera for its multimedia capabilities at www.thewellspoint.com and its combination of power and smaller profile, ideal for street photography and world travel.
