Enjoyable Lens
I'll admit this lens of mine no longer gets the use it used to once I got the 12-40 f2.8 pro, but I still take it out when I just want to snap some pictures in tight or enveloping spaces where I need a bit of a wide-angle edge without distortion, without the weight and bulk. Works great for nightscapes as well, with its relatively wide aperture. It's also true that this lens is not as sharp as it could be, but on the flip side, the thing that rarely gets mentioned is that the color reproduction on the lens is very good. Much better than the kit lenses. Also things like flare, chromatic aberration are well controlled, even without software correction. The metal body construction on lens is a nice touch, but I'm conflicted on the cost and weight penalties it applies as I personally would prefer a lightweight, lower cost plastic housing. (Buying a set of primes adds up fast!) However, looks and fits nicely on a PEN body for more relaxed shooting.

Incredible lens for low-light shooting
I used this lens on my OM-D E-M1 for the first time the other night in the city of Regensburg, Bavaria. I wanted to document the repairs on the 1000 year old Stone Bridge and take photos at an all you can eat mussels dinner in a restaurant up the street from the bridge. I took some fabulous shots at both places. The colors and natural lighting effects are a great improvement over flash shots (which I've always disliked). Although not a substitute for the 12-40mm pro lens, I know I will be using this one ALOT. Especially in museums, churches, cathedrals and nightime scenes in European cities. I go to Prague next weekend. I have been there before and taken many photos, even at night. I am looking forward to what news looks I will get with this lens as I stroll around at night there. In agreement with a previous comment, using this lens makes the OM-D E-M1 seem like a different camera and in close quarters, this is a real plus, too. This lens permits me to live my motto: "Never miss the shot". Another home run, Olympus.

STILL MY FAVORITE MICRO FOUR-THIRDS LENS
My M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 came bundled with the PEN E-P5 and arguably is the lens that made me fall in love with the Micro Four-Thirds system. I previously had just the PEN E-P3 with the M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 lens, which was great setup to take along hiking and kayaking, but I still preferred my Canon 5D Mark III for more “serious” photography. But, that all has changed. This lens is fabulous in low light, with good contrast, pleasant color, and lovely bokeh. It’s faster and even more accurate in focusing than the M.Zuiko ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO, which I have since bought and is an excellent lens in its own right. The PEN E-P5 with the 17mm f1.8 lens is also great for street photography since it looks like an old style camera and is less intimidating to people. With the improved low light capabilities of the PEN E-P5 and outstanding 5-axis image stabilization, the Canon camera with its heavy lenses are staying at home more often these days.

Good things come in small packages
I am a new owner of an OMD E-M1 and I feel as though I have a different camera when using this lens rather than the 12-40mm pro zoom which I purchased with the camera. The zoom lens is superb, no doubt about it, but this one lightens the whole package significantly so that the EM-1 becomes almost a compact pocket camera. The lens is bright, fast, sharp, and the focal length is perfect for street photography and everyday shooting. I also love its ability to switch quickly to manual focus mode by just pulling back on the focus ring. Expensive but, to me, worth it!

Great lens in a small package
I almost sent this lens back because of a snafu on my part, but ended up giving it a try. And I'm so glad I did. This is an exceptional lens. It is quick to focus (even on my EP-2) and is really sharp. It produces wonderful color. I did have to remember, since it's not a zoom, to get in close to my subject if that what's needed. The 1.8 has allowed me to take photos and create "atmosphere" that previously wasn't possible. Love it!
