OM SYSTEM OM-1

As a reference, I own two E-M5s (1st generation), an E-M1 and an E-M1 mk2. I have always used the deep eyecup (for example Olympus EP-13), there is no equivalent for the OM-1. <br />I have not taken any images yet. These are my impressions in handling the OM-1. <br />I like the on-off switch of the E-M1 mk2 better but the deck is too tight for that type of switch. The change in the dial placement will take some getting used to but the change allows the shutter button to be at a slightly better angle. I find the dial ergonomics to be poor and a bit painful. The placement of the dials makes their use much harder because they are set deeper in the body and there is much less surface area to get a purchase on the dial. The edge of the body on the rear dial gets in the way of the rear dial. So that I have to reach a little over it. The ridges on the dials are deeper and coarser. This was the probably done because the dials are set deeper and have less area to make contact. It also makes the dials harsher on the thumb and forefinger. Overall, the OM-1 dials feel cramped. While the shutter buttons line up nicely between the E-M1 mk2 and the OM-1, the dials are moved to the right slightly on the OM-1. This and the lack of dial surface makes the dials harder to use. <br />The biggest disappointment is manual focus. Manual focus in moderate to low light is very difficult. First, I tried the 12-40 f2.8 in manual focus with focus peaking. The viewfinder was so noisy that peaking was useless. The noise presents as peaking, bright red, as if the camera cannot distinguish noise from actual focus. This means that you can't distinguish the noise from actual focus. I tried the 60mm f2.8 macro with the same results. I then tried a manual focus lens. The viewfinder is so noisy/grainy that it is very difficult to focus on the subject. My E-M1 mk2 works well in these situations. I didn't notice any issues with manual focus in bright light (but I spent less than a minute testing it). Because of the manual focus issues, I returned the camera. I wanted to like the OM-1 but it is not functional for my needs. I will probably buy an E-M1 mk3 when they go on sale again.
