Why do so many dogs have social media accounts? Because they’re adorable and lead interesting lives of course.
Every dog has a unique adventure but arguably the most interesting lives are those of New York City dogs. The city that never sleeps has a rotating cast of characters and it’s a very different lifestyle for a dog than living in the suburbs. Enjoy a look into a day in a life NYC pup with Jackson.
Rescued from a puppy mill in the Midwest, Jackson met his forever human when he was just a pup at an adoption event in Manhattan. Like many #DogsofNewYork, Jackson leads an adventurous life where every second outside his apartment means for new smells and social interactions.
Tip: Get on your dog’s level to capture their personality and look for opportunities to play with symmetrical back drops.

A WALK IN THE PARK
Jackson’s favorite part of living in the city would have to be the selection of spectacular parks. From Central Park to Madison Square, almost every park in NYC has a designated dog run for pups to gallivant and socialize. When Jackson’s not stretching his legs out and chasing squirrels, you can catch him by the fountains, taking in the beautiful view while the wet breeze hits his face.
Tip: Try a faster shutter speed to freeze motion, like the water droplets of this fountain.

THE PERKS OF BEING SMALL
Not all dogs can ride the subway, but Jackson can. He loves to hop on the train and ride it all over the city. It’s much faster than walking and saves the energy needed to chase squirrels and pigeons. Lucky for Jackson, his petite figure makes it easy to fit in a bag, which is now a requirement to ride NYC subways.
Tip: Use a width aperture (F1.8-F5.6) to create more separation between your focused subject and a busy background.

TAKING TIME TO SMELL THE FLOWERS
Jackson likes to start his day with a walk. There are always new things to notice and inspect, especially when the seasons change. He’s very fond of flowers and smelling who else has been there before him.
For photographers, one of the most rewarding experiences is a shift in perspective. Getting down to Jackson’s level means a whole new view of the city.
Tip: Place a treat in the environment you’d like your subject to interact with.

A PUP OF EXQUISITE TASTE
During his walks, Jackson sometimes likes to stop and check out local shops like this vintage record store. While he really likes classic jazz, he has been feeling folk music lately.
Tip: Practice the Rule of Thirds and frame your shot for more balance and creative composition.

EVERY HOUR IS HAPPY HOUR
One of the best ways to wrap up a busy day in New York City is with an old-fashioned nightcap. No, Jackson doesn’t drink, but he enjoys hanging out while his human does. Getting to sit at the table makes him feel like one of the big dogs.
Tip: Widen the lens aperture (F1.8-F5.6) to create more distance between the background and your subject.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
After a long day exploring the city, Jackson lives for the moment he can get home to his own bed to rest. It takes a lot to lead such an exciting life and Jackson loves every minute of it, but he also loves a good nap.
Tip: Get creative with artistic effects like vignette to draw the eye into the center of your photo.
