About Peter

Olympus Visionary, Peter Baumgarten is a professional photographer and educator based on Manitoulin Island in Ontario, Canada, where the stunning nature surrounding him inspires his work. Peter has been a dedicated Olympus shooter for close to 40 years, having picked up his first Olympus camera at the age of 12. Inspired by Canadian photographer, Freeman Patterson and his book “Photography and the Art of Seeing”, Peter is always striving to see the world in ways that most people miss. He put the camera away in his 20s and 30s, but when the digital revolution struck, his passion for the craft was reignited and he has never looked back.

“I don’t want a camera that gets in the way of my creative vision. I want one that is an extension of that vision. Every time I pick up one of my Olympus cameras it becomes part of me as a visual artist.”

Peter is also a 30-year veteran of the teaching profession and although he has recently retired from full-time teaching, he regularly leads photography courses and workshops for novice and enthusiast photographers with a focus on landscape, wildlife and astrophotography. As owner of Creative Island Photography, Peter has taken that inspiration and turned a lifelong interest into a second career. His love of the craft has also become a great excuse to continue his other passion – exploring the great outdoors through wilderness camping, canoeing and kayaking.

Peter’s work has been published in a number of magazines in both Canada and the United States including Canadian Geographic, Shutterbug, Outdoor Photographer, and others. He has also been recognized for photographic excellence and vision on a number of websites. Peter maintains his own blog with an emphasis on tutorials that will assist others in bringing their photography up to the next level.

Peter resides with his wife and the “comings and goings” of six adult children. When not out photographing his surroundings, he continues to teach part-time, renovate his 130-year old home, garden, and participate in a local theatre group.

Peter has quickly become a fan of the OM-D E-M1 Mark II and is thrilled by the camera’s ability to deliver outstanding image quality without weighing him down.

The Olympus Visionary Program is Olympus America Inc.’s official program for its sponsored photographers. Olympus Visionaries consist of a select group of photographers from across the U.S. and Canada who represent a variety of photography genres, and offer varying years of experience and influence. From Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalists to successful entrepreneurs to passionate creators who shoot and share their vision with their dedicated social communities, each has a unique point of view, an enthusiasm for Olympus products and the brand, a strong presence in the photography community, and best practices to share.

The Visionaries use their unique real-world experiences and technical expertise to inspire photo enthusiasts and professionals alike and embrace Olympus camera systems as their tool of choice for capturing and sharing their world in vivid detail. They provide product feedback in an effort to improve Olympus products, programs and services. They also represent Olympus by speaking at Photography Conferences, Photo Specialty Dealer Events, Tradeshows, and more.
