WHEN IT COMES TO WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY JAY DICKMAN IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE
Story Image
Jay is one of those rare people who finds himself as much at home in a primitive campsite on the Serengeti as he is in a big city. He’s won a Pulitzer, journalism’s biggest prize, and has completed more than 25 photo assignments for National Geographic Society. Jay’s pretty much done it all — lived in a Stone Age village in Papua New Guinea for three months, spent a week in a nuclear sub under the Arctic and escaped from a sinking boat on the Amazon River. In between adventures, he’s traveled the world capturing wildlife with breathtaking photos. He’s also a lecturer, author and teacher. Jay was also named one of Travel + Leisure magazine’s “10 Fascinating People You Can Travel With in 2017.” Jay has been an Olympus Visionary since 2003. Here’s why in his own words:
“My world as a photographer is about travel and quality gear. The Olympus OM-D system is designed exactly for my needs. The compact size, weatherproof design and image quality are amazing in my OM-D E-M1 Mark II. It’s a constant companion in my work.”
Enough said.

PROTECTS ITSELF
FROM BAD WEATHER
Lousy weather often takes you by surprise. The OM-D E-M1 Series and our PRO lenses have you covered. They’re splashproof, dustproof and freezeproof [down to 14 ̊F / -10 ̊C]. There's no need to carry protective gear, so you can focus on keeping an eye on your subject instead of watching out for your camera.
COMPACT WITH
SUPERB IMAGE QUALITY
Do you really want to walk through woods, mountain trails, or a park looking for wildlife while carrying big lenses and a bulky camera? Let the OM-D system set you free. Its compact body and small, lightweight lenses deliver faster performance than any DSLR camera and lens. You’ll have greater freedom of movement to capture better photos.

WILDLIFE CAN MOVE FAST.
KEEP UP.
The speed of the OM-D E-M1 Series blows away DSLR cameras. You can capture up to an astounding 60 frames per second (fps) in S-AF and 18 fps in C-AF Tracking using the silent electronic shutter. With the mechanical shutter, you can achieve speeds of 15 fps in S-AF and 10 fps in C-AF Tracking. All ideal for rapid-fire shooting when you need it.
NEVER MISS A SHOT Imagine spotting a cheetah that’s ready to start running. Our Pro Capture feature helps you nail the perfect shot. Press the shutter button halfway to start buffering a running series of 20MP resolution images. Once you see the precise moment you want to capture, fully press the shutter button to instantly record that image, plus up to 35 previous frames.
PRECISE AUTOFOCUSING Photographing an animal moving at top speed requires incredibly fast and accurate autofocus. The Dual FAST Autofocus system features 121 points of Phase Detection plus Contrast Detection AF. Each cross-type AF point delivers superior detection of horizontal and vertical lines, giving you superior accuracy.
TECHNOLOGY HAS REPLACED THE TRIPOD Ensure your shots are always sharp and blur-free. Our industry-leading 5-Axis Image Stabilization system adjusts for all types of camera movement to provide up to 7.5 shutter speed steps of compensation. Capture crisp handheld shots in super-telephoto or low light settings, and always have the freedom to react to fast-moving subjects.

TOP TECH TIPS

FOR PHOTOGRAPHING WILDLIFE WITH AN OM-D

Presenting a few convenient tips from Jay Dickman to help you make the most of the advanced technology you’ll have at your fingertips. Think of it as a quick guide to the right settings for bringing home some stunning wildlife photos.

USE THE AUTO-ISO SETTING

The trinity of exposure is shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. By using Auto-ISO, you can choose your other settings while the camera automatically figures out the ISO. It’s perfect for ensuring proper exposure for that split-second shot.

SHOOT IN SHUTTER PRIORITY MODE

Make sure your shutter is set at the best speed for what you’re trying to photograph by using Shutter Priority Mode. To freeze fast-moving wildlife, set your shutter speed to a quick 1/2500th sec.

SET TO SEQUENTIAL SHOOTING LOW

Up your odds of capturing that exact moment you’ve been waiting hours for. The E-M1 Series' Sequential Shooting Low Mode provides up to 18 fps while constantly adjusting the autofocus for movement in the frame. You’ll stand a much better chance of nailing your shot.

USE THE 9-POINT AF TARGET.

Choose the 9 AF points just below the center of the viewfinder, because that’s where you’ll typically position a bird in your frame.

USE BACK BUTTON AUTOFOCUS

Activating this setting turns the back button into the autofocus button (so the shutter button won’t engage the AF). Wildlife can move very quickly, so you want as much control over autofocus as possible.

KEEP YOUR FINGER ON THE EXPOSURE COMPENSATION DIAL.

Lighting conditions can quickly change, especially when shooting outdoors. Keep your finger on the exposure compensation dial, conveniently located at the front of the E-M1 Mark II so you can lighten or darken your image.
