Couldn't ask for better

Every shot with this darn lens just screams, "beauty!" I can't take a bad shot with it... "Click!" Perfect. "Click!" Perfect. Mix this with it's compact form factor, quick AF, lack of CA or distiortion, and it's got amazing color reproduction and just enough punchy contrast to boot! Geez, this lens is could be worth twice its price (but it doesn't come with a hood, so no deal!).

If I had to reach for something bad to say about this lens, it really is the lack of a hood! That's just weird... But not worth taking a star.

Amazing job from the guys in blue!

Makes for great portrait shots.

I have been using this me we for about 6 months. It has given me some really great portrait shots of our daughter. The pictures are very bright and sharp. Great to be able to shoot without the flash get great colours. With the holiday season it has been perfect for lowlight pictures with the tree. Now if only I could get my daughter to sit still longer I'd get even more!! Definitely recommend this lens.

My Favorite Lens Right Now

This is my favorite lens right now! Super fast and razor sharp! The photos are beautiful and I could not be a happier customer with this purchase. This lens gets tremendous work during family photo shoots, and the results really show compared to other non-portrait lenses. This lens really can separate the subject at the lowest f 1.8, and the sharpness is quite good. The lens can be used at f 1.8 quite often due to the inherent sharpness present. A must have for prime lens professionals.

Outstanding lens, decent build quality

The 45mm 1.8 is a wonderful, compact, short telephoto lens. In my experience, it is sharp starting right from f/1.8, focuses relatively quickly, and produces beautiful results. The 1.8 aperture really comes in handy when isolating the subject from the background, especially in portraits. An amazing lens!

The build quality is good - not the great solid metal construction like some of the other lenses in the system, but a good plastic housing. It would also be great if it came with the lens hood instead of having it be separate.

My only gripes with the lens are the 37mm filter size - most of my other lenses take 46mm filters, so it makes it harder to share between them.

Allmost perfect little lens

This lens is very light and feel an touch is plastic. At least the lens mount is metal.
It also doesn't have the 'Manual' focus ring which is a pity.
It's also a pity that this lens does not come with a lens hood.
Anyhow once you have this little one one your camera you might not want to remove it.
Very nice for portrait work - sharp at 1.8 with a decent bokeh.
Fast Autofocus with only little hunting in low light and only very few out-of-focus pics.

awesome portrait lens!

I have been using this lens for the past few months and it has become my most favorite portrait lens! The sharpness is amazing and provides the perfect amount of compression at 45mm (90mm equivalent). Don't let the small size fool you as the lens produces amazing photos. I love opening a photo in Photoshop, zooming all the way in and seeing all the details that it has captured. I never leave the house without this lens! Must have!

Best Lens I Own

I have been using this for a portrait class in college, and have gotten amazing quality work with this lens. My professor in art photography even asked, "What lens is this? I really need to buy it." The quality is just too good compared to the rest of my kit. If that doesn't convince you that you need this lens, I'm not sure what will. I continuously reach for this lens and find myself switching back to it over lenses with better range, etc., even over other cameras that I own.

Perfect Portrait

This is my favorite lens of all my micro four thirds. This lens gets tremendous work during family gatherings, and the results really show compared to other non-portrait lenses, and obviously compared to run of the mill point and shoots. This lens really can separate the subject at the lowest f 1.8, and the sharpness is quite good. The lens can be used at f 1.8 quite often due to the inherent sharpness present.

It's really an amazing little thing, does what's expected from.
I'm using this lense with olympus air a01 and it's doing a great job.
I took a really nice photos with it.
I like the size, weight and quality of the photos.
The auto focus is really fast.
I use it almost for everything.
I think it's a MUST have lense for a 4/3 cameras.

Great short telephoto and useful for throwing the background out of focus of one or two person portrait photos. One star off since the autofocus can sometimes not lock in after initial start up. Just use manual focus to bring some contrasting edges into the frame and the autofocus will be able to pick it up from there. I keep this lens with me just about all the time.

Great portrait and street lens

Is it as good as the 75mm f/1.8? Nope, but it's close and, for the price, it's a terrific medium tele lens for portraits and street work. Light and quite sharp it's on a par with the 25 f/1.8 in price, size and IQ.

A great portrait lens

It is simply the best portrait lens I've ever used. I love the bokeh, sharpness, and autofocus speed.

Small, lightweight, and razor sharp

Got this lens for some headshots at work (and well, I do love primes!) and have not been at all disappointed. The focus is quick, and the images are very sharp. Got a good deal on it in the refurb store to save a bit of money. This one will get a lot of use!

Excellent portrait lens with stunning sharpness, contrast, and background blurring capabilities

I use this lens with OMD-EM10. This is another very sharp lens. It has a good solid feel. It is middle sized in my holy trinity of prime lenses which includes beside the 45mm, the Olympus 25mm f1.8 and Panasonic 14mm lens. However all three of my prime lenses + my 75-300 with a spare battery fit in my National Geograhic Africa collection small sling bag NG A4567. So while it is bigger than my other prime lenses, it is not huge. Infact it balances really well with the OMD-EM10.

The images this lens produces are stunning. They have very good colour, sharpness, and contrast. Same as the Olympus 25mm f1.8 lens. The focal length is eqivalent to 90mm of film camera. This focal lenght is ideal for portrait photography. It is sharp even wide open at f1.8. I manage to get decent background blur. People go wow when they see their picture taken with this lens.

If you are looking for a prime portrait lens, then go for this lens. It is for sure a very sharp and excellent lens. Highly recommended.

Great lens for the price.

Great for portrait as well as more general use. Nice street lens fast and sharp for the price. You won't be disappointed with it.

Tiny Wonder

This short tele lens is great for 1-2 person head and shoulder portraits. It's relatively low priced, and almost quizzically small for its focal length.

If you haven't been satisfied enough with shallow subject isolation from the kit lenses--particularly at full zoom, this lens will probably fix that.

I beat mine up pretty badly, and it looks terrible, but it keeps shooting great pictures. Sharp wide open, even sharper stopped down a notch or two. Initially I hated using this focal length, but after getting accustomed to shooting close portrait shots, I really warmed up to it, and use it as much as I can. It's a faint bit soft in the corners, but unless you're trying to shoot landscapes at hyperfocal, it's probably not a issue. Color reproduction is of course, great.

Haven't tested it extensively against my new and highly regarded 40-150mm f2.8 pro, but the pro is a bit sharper from what I can tell. Colors seem similar. Quite a feat against that monster of a (m4/3) lens! The 45 is not obsolete by any measure in contrast to that, especially in size.

Highly recommended if you're looking for something in this focal length. Great fun once you get a feeling for it.

What a great little lens!

I've been after a decent focal length with fast aperture for a while now. I did "almost" pay a lot more for a competitive brand and decided to check this 45 mm f1.8 out personally at a local dealer.

Not only is this lens great for portraits or shots requiring the focal length but the bokeh achieved by varying the aperture is quite amazing. I have been keeping it on my camera constantly as the lens of choice over the 17 mm lens that came with the camera.

I took some portrait shots recently and the subject emailed me a little while ago complimenting the work.

The price and performance of this lens is in a league of its own.

Pictures just POP, worth every penny

Well, there's a lot of good reviews here, and for good reason.

Pictures pop and explode with contrast, sharpness and Bokeh at just the right mixture. Professional prints jump at you.

A must have for tighter shots to isolate subjects.

The longer the focal length, the better Bokeh works. This is starting into the creamier out of focus, and I love it. This one is at the start of portrait lengths, and I can't wait to get the 75mm version.

There is no reason not to buy it, save.

March 22, 2014

Very Disappointed in IQ

I purchased this lens after to use as a small, portable, lens on my E-M1 expecting great image quality based on hundreds of reviews. The image quality I have experienced is mediocre at best, on par with the 75-300 V1 zoom. Both my 12-40 zoom and my 75mm are significantly sharper than this 45. I will be returning this lens and consider it to be a sub-par performer. Possibly there are manufacturing issues with it?
It is light, small and easy to handle and focuses fast which is why I gave it a 2 star rating.

Sharp, compact and affordable!

The sharpness of this lens is truly impressive. I'm simply stunned at how well this 45mm reproduces color and contrast.

To this into perspective, I pitted the 45mm against my 1500.00 dollar 50mm 1.4 Sony zeiss. Even at 200% crops viewed on an LED LCD screen I cannot tell that much of a difference. In fact, at 1.8 this lens produces plenty of bokeh where the 1.4 zeiss must be stopped down. In real world terms outside of gallery prints being viewed at 300 DPI 3 inches from your face- differences are minimal.

It's a steller lens and the price is bargain basement. I see the size as just an added bonus. It's really getting hard to justify expensive full frame lenses when you see the high quality Olympus can produce in a small package.

Do yourself a favor and buy this lens. In fact, I think if your at all serious about photography your doing yourself an injustice by not giving this a try. It's that unbelievably good. I just paired it with the E-P5 and picked up the 9-18- it just keeps getting better! Great job Olympus- keep it up.

Great portrait and general purpose lens

This lens is the equivalent of a 90mm lens on a full frame camera. I use it for head shots and LOTS of stuff outdoors. I used it to take great images of the Atlanta Braves at night in Turner Field with my E-M5. Even though I was in the "first deck", quite a distance away, the shots were sharp when viewed at 1:1 on a 24 inch monitor. It is probably the single "best value" lens in the lineup. You can use it indoors for candid closeups without a flash. It's really useful, once you understand the more limited view.
ONE precaution: The outside is NOT metal, even though it looks like metal. My particular silver example's "ribbed ring" has a few gashes and marks from being thrown in a bag with other hard objects (front and back covers on, of course).

The Must Have Lens for OM D

This is a must have lens at this price but be careful if you have a bag of zooms. After you use this you will not be pulling out the zooms much. Better get good at Craigslist...

I ended up selling all my zooms (and $6K worth of Canon DSLRs) and buying all the primes.

Does the "D" in DSLR stand for dinosaur?

This was my first prime and arguably the most useful. At this price it is a no brainer. The image quality is so much better than any of the zooms. You can actually get subject isolation on a blurred background.

I added the 75mm 1.8, the Voightlander 17.5, the Pan/Leica 25mm f/1.4, the 60mm macro and a Rokinon fish eye. Superb!

Low-light portraits

This is a lovely little portrait lens, made out of plastic (except metal mount) so it is very lightweight and compact, equally at home on the smallest body like E-PM3 or a larger body. Its large aperture makes it ideal for evening, interior, or other low-light applications. Its bokeh is pleasing and it produces lovely available-light portraits. It's not so good for landscape use because the edge and corner sharpness does not match its excellent center sharpness. But for a portrait lens it can't be beat. Only fault is that Olympus are too cheap to include a matching hood and pouch.

Buy this lens

This is the sharpest lens I have used on my OM-D. It is extremely well made for the money and the image quality to my pixel peeking eyes is amazing. You will not regret adding this lens to your micro four thirds camera.

Enables stunning shots of common objects!

I recently upgraded to an EM-5 with the 12mm - 50mm, f3.5 lens and was extremely satisfied with the results. To my surprise the photos with this new lens had greater clarity and depth than the zoom lens that came with the camera. Plus the low f-stop enables really fast shutter speeds! Wish I could attach the photo of the bumblebee in flight with wings frozen. I am still exploring / learning with this lens and look forward to some excelent results in the future. The only drawback I see is that the effective 90mm focal length may be useful for portraits but not as much so for landscape photos. Guess I will start saving up for the more expensive 12mm lens.

The best deal for a telephoto all-around lens

The M.45mm F1.8 was the first prime lens that I have bought to fit with my EP-3 camera two years ago. And it was precisely the overall performance of this lens that has convinced me to invest further in the M4/3 system.
The M.45mm F1.8 remind me closely the pleasure of using my ex-90mm F2.8 Tele-Elmarit some twenty years ago as a all-around short telephoto lens. For that matter I have chosen to add the lens hood that just to remind me the first purpose of the lens (telephoto).
Medium portrait results are outstanding with moderate creamy background. But the lens can be used as a long "normal" lens for everyday picture taking. It compress moderately the foreground and the background subjects for interesting landscape or "urbanscape".
Because of its plastic construction the lens is very light and as I already said the M.45mm is very small.
For the selling price point don't prevent yourself to bring one in your...pocket since you don't need to have a gadget bag to do so!

No fault lens

It is hard to find any fault with this lens. No lens is perfect wide open, but this is as good as any. For the inexpensive asking price it is a true bargain, and opens up portrait images with nicely blurred backgrounds. Fast AF is welcome, as is the silent operation. Only complaint is the removable ring for the hood (not included) - I find it occasionally slips off during handling.

I take this lens everywhere I can!

Frank in NOLA

great value for the $

this is one great little compact lens. gives real nice quality pictures and fast. i just wished they had kept the raised red dot so when in low light or night light one can find the mount point like the 4/3 lens

My favorite micro four thirds lens!

I've been waiting for a fast aperture portrait lens for micro four thirds, and this is it! Focus is snappy even on a first generation PEN, and the pictures are amazing. Great contrast, detail, smooth bokeh, and excellent color rendition. I would recommend this lens heartily for anyone.

Awesome lens

if you are considering this lens! STOP and buy it. if you never consider this before! You should start considering.
this lens has wonderful creamy bokeh and super sharp even in widest aperture.
