Whether you’re shooting on a rafting trip or in a snowboard park, you’re focused on getting awesome shots. Your camera should take care of itself. The TG-5 does – no protective housing needed. It’s waterproof to 50 ft (15 m), crushproof up to 220 lbf (100 kgf), and shockproof from 7 ft (2.1 m). It’s dustproof and works great even at a bone-chilling 14°F (-10°C). With TG-5, incredible still shots are only half the story. Simply turn the TG-5’s Mode Dial to the movie icon to capture Ultra HD 4K video with spectacular detail just as you remember it – the colors in a sunset, the coral on a reef, a skier carving a mountainside. Besides jaw-dropping 4K, you can shoot video in Full HD 1080 or HD 720. Get creative with TG-5’s Full HD 120 fps High Speed Video for slow motion playback. For longer adventures, the 4K Time Lapse feature lets you easily create short videos of extended periods of time.

    REALLY, REALLY CLOSE.

An exotic flower, a multicolored seashell, an insect on a leaf. The TG-5 makes incredible macro photography easy. Turn the Mode Dial to the microscope icon and shoot as close as 1 cm from your subject. Microscope Control Mode provides magnification in precise steps up to 44x. Use the Focus Bracketing and Focus Stacking Modes to easily create images with maximum depth of field and razor sharp focus. Add the optional LG-1 Light Guide to evenly illuminate still subjects up close and the optional FD-1 Flash Diffuser to freeze moving macro subjects at fast shutter speeds.

Possibly the best macro point-and-shoot
I got this specifically for the macro at which this camera really shines compared to other modern point-and-shoots I've used. Most modern point-and-shoots won't let you take macro shots at anything but the widest angles which means it isn't really macro. This camera lets you take macro shots at about 1cm away from the lens throughout the entire zoom range which means you get the equivalent zoom of a SLR with macro-lens. Due to the sensor size, image quality obviously isn't as good, but for the size of the camera, it is awesome. The in-camera focus-stacking is great. It works if things hold still, but not so good in wind. It is however amazingly forgiving about movement, but it is good to brace the subject and/or the camera against something. I haven't tried it yet, but if you want to do your own stacking, there is a focus bracketing option as well. There is also manual focus for tricky focus situations. I've used it with the flash diffuser FD-1 and am quite happy with that. It gives good light for close-up flash work. Now for the bad points: While you can adjust the flash intensity and exposure compensation to a point, you can't just manually set the aperture and speed. Where this is problematic is if you are taking photos of something moving fast like a bug or a flower in the wind. In most other cameras, I will set the speed to 1/2000 of a second and use the flash for these situation. This freezes all movement and gives you a nice black background. Unless Olympus updates the firmware, this is not an option with this camera. You get only whatever the camera thinks you want. There should be a fully manual macro mode to allow for all situations as the automatic camera settings just don't work well sometimes. This is the only major flaw I've found so far. Possibly the most ridiculous thing about the camera is that, if you want a lens cap, you have to buy it separately. Nothing makes for a better photo than all that dirt and scratches on your lens because you didn't have a cap to protect it. I'm just keeping the FD-1 on which at least gives the lens a bit more of a buffer from scratches. I also keep it in a good case when not taking photos to keep the lens clean. Also annoying is that you have to buy an extremely expensive battery charger separately if you want one. What happened to every camera coming with one? If you take a lot of photos and want to be taking photos while one of your batteries is charging, you'll need this. Note that there is a separate part to convert the charger from USB to a wall outlet. The charger is USB only. Thankfully that converter comes with the camera. The GPS is a disappointment as you have to use an app to actually apply the location to the photo. Why not just have the camera put the coordinates into the EXIF file when it takes the photo? On the plus side, I found there are plenty of programs that will do the same thing from whatever GPS you are carrying. The bonus of using an external GPS is it doesn't eat away your camera battery and may have much better accuracy. All-in-all, I definitely recommend the camera, but I hope they will fix the flaws, especially the lack of manual control in macro mode.

tough camera
This is my first Olympus camera. I bought the Tough TG-5 because I typically killed my previous cameras about once a year. I ride horses and typically am photos of mountain and back country scenery from the back of a horse. I wanted a simple to use pocket camera that I could easily pull out of shirt pocket and take a photo with. Since I'm usually controlling a horse. It has to be a one handed operation. So my first complaint is that I frequently have a finger showing int he right edge of my photos. It's just natural to have the thumb on the back, index finger on the button to shoot and the other fingers on the front of the camera. The position of the bump in the camera body seems to always force my middle finger in front of the lense. I don't have that problem if I use two hands. But for one handed operation I'm deleting a lot of photos because my finger is in the shot. I love the fact that I was able to buy a protective lense filter. Past camera always to seem to get a scratched lense after a year of traveling in my pocket. With this , I can throw away the filter and buy a new one if the first gets scratched. I also bought the silicon jacket. It gives me a better grip on the camera and i hope helps keep dust and other debris from getting into the camera. I wish the camera had just a little stronger zoom. I often see wildlife while riding my horses and it would be great to be able to quickly zoom in for a closer shot. I'll never use all the features that this camera has. The primary features for me are pocket size, quick one handed operation and toughness to survive getting dropped or wet.

A lot of camera for a good price that goes where you go rain or shine
This is my third Tough camera after the 8000 and 8010. The format is different and a little larger, but it still fits in the pocket of my bike jersey. It does not have the lens-protecting door of the older cameras. I would feel "safer" if it did. I carry a Tough camera in case of falls, dirt and water, and when and where I don't dare carry a DLSR or Micro 4/3, like the beach. The TG-5 has a much faster shutter-to-capture time compared to the older models, not as fast as the Pen-F, but fast enough to capture some action. I like that, and for that reason alone, it was worth the upgrade. I actually bought the camera for three other features, the ability to shoot RAW and GPS with Wi-Fi. I am temporarily disappointed with the RAW, since Capture One Pro-10 cannot yet read them, but that should happen. The GPS is a bit slow to capture the satellite compare to GPS on the iPhone, but it works, and in Europe, it saved me having to use cellular data. The GPS log is an interesting gimmick. It requires an additional app to use it, and the explanation in the manual on how to use it is vague. It does not really. contribute to the photography unless you want to draw a map of where you took your photos. I am glad to have one.
