On one hand, the Olympus LS-7 Linear PCM recorder with superior-to-CD quality sound, three sensitive microphones, pre-recording function, and more, is easy to operate. You will find a ton of usefulness packed into a slim package weighing 3.17 ounces. Just turn it on. You will be amazed.

Sound that’s even better than what you hear on a compact disc. Every nuance of every note and syllable is captured and played back with a rich and resonant quality.

With 4GB of internal memory you’ll be able to capture hours of music, lectures, and more – and still have room to store documents. For even more storage, the LS-7 is microSD card compatible.

The LS-7 employs two condenser stereo mics and a center, omni-directional mic capable of capturing lower bass ranges as low as 20Hz. The 45-degree outward positions of the two condenser mics enable users to record with wider stereo sound.

Select from one of three standard recording formats: WAV, MP3 or WMA. The availability of three compatible formats increases the versatility of decisive, on-the-spot audio recording.

With a USB cable or optional AC adapter it is easy to charge your recorder. You can also quickly transfer your files over to your Mac or PC via a USB cable.

Divide files and make partial cuts right inside the device. Or, move and copy files between the internal memory and the micro SD card, which makes it easier to switch to a different micro SD card on the go.

Recording preferences can be fine-tuned with a Level function that’s clearly displayed, along with a PEAK indicator, on the recorder’s bright LCD.

Voice feedback for actions lets the user operate the LS-7 without looking at the display.

Voice Activation makes automatic starting and stopping of the recorder an extra benefit that saves time and energy.

Excellent. Recordings sound the same as live

I use the LS-7 mostly to record my wife singing and playing the guitar. I also use it to record church choir practice. In all situations the sound quality is excellent. When I play back the recordings the sound is the same as it was when I was recording live. No need for external michrophones; the built in michrophones have better frequency response than most external mikes.

Nelson Brothers Band-My Cousins

The only recorder I ever owned was one with little tapes - and it was larger than this one. I record my cousin's band and this is a GREAT recorder. I have now downloaded three performances - each one better than the last - depending on where I put the recorder. Mostly I just record with it in my hand - The sound quality is super and it is easy to use. I love the fact that you can just plug it directly into your computer - with no cords. I bought mine as a 'rebuilt' from the internet - and would certainly buy another if I had to do so. Maybe the next one will be a rechargeable one although the one AAA battery lasts a long time. I am pleasantly surprised and recommend this little recorder.

Product exceeded my expectations

I do not typically write reviews on electronics, but this product has so far exceeded my expectations that I felt compelled to share my experience. I am a university student. My lectures are typically held in halls that can, and do hold up to 500 students. I have tried to record lectures with other devices. All would only work if i managed to get a seat near the front of the hall. This recorder is so sensitive, that it picks up no matter where I sit. I can't tell you how much this has helped me. The only nut for me is the price. It is on the high side, especially for a broke university student.

LS-7 as am MP3 Player

I'm using my LS-7 as an MP3/WMA player and loving it. It produces great sound quality and is frugal on batteries. I love the fact I can use disposable alkaline batteries and replace as needed for on-the-go portability without dragging around a charger. The tonal quality is wonderful and with an external portable amplifier (battery powered) it can drive nearly any type of headphones and be readily available even when far away from AC power.

I am comparing it to the older LS-10

Five days ago (August 30, 2011) I bought an Olympus LS-7, and I have to get this off my chest before I explode - the thing rocks! Here's is what I have found.
I have been comparing it to the earlier Olympus LS-10 which I also own, and before that a recorder from a different manufacturer. The other manufacturer's recorder sounded good, but the menu was the most confounding, confusing menu I have ever seen. And that is why I bought the LS-10. It was way easier to use.
The LS-7 sounds better than either of the other two, and the LS-7's menu is every bit as easy to use as that of the LS-10. But the LS-7's sound and functions go much beyond the older LS-10. The LS-7 has a better frequency response on the low end because of its middle microphone. And you can turn off that mic when you don't want the low response. The LS-7 also has an additional frequency in the low cut filter - off, 100 Hz and 300 Hz. What a difference this makes for keeping out air conditioner and furnace fan noise when recording a seminar. I ran side by side comparisons in a large room where I teach workshops, and the 300 Hz low-cut filter did the trick.
The specs on microphone sensitivity are better on the LS-7 than on the LS-10 and the sound level difference it quite noticeable. The LS-7 comes in at a -70 dbv compared to the -59 dbv of the LS-10. The "high" mic sensitivity setting on the older LS-10 seems to be about the same as the "Mid" setting on the LS-7. And with the LS-7's mic sensitivity set on "High," I can talk in a fairly soft voice from 2 feet away and it "pins" the meter.
The battery life is astounding! I've been using the LS-7 every day, and it still has battery life on the original charge I gave it right after I opened the box. My LS-10 would have long since run down the batteries.
Olympus, thank you. You've done it again. This is a great product for musicians, public speakers, students and anyone who ever wants to record a concert, a seminar, a class, or a workshop.

Great compact power house digital recorder

Found this product easy to use and had no problem playing the audio files on my powerbook g4 10.4.11 w/Audacity (free editing program). Breeze to use and change any settings. Can't wait to use it in the field.

Mac User

Not for Apple Users

On the good side the sound quality was good and it was pretty easy to use. But when I tried to play its files on my macbook neither quick time or itunes would play it. On this web site it explains that I have to buy additional third party software. I don't think so. I feel lied to because it says this recorder is compatible with macs on the box.

Can't do without..

I'm so glad I bought this product. One of my group members couldn't make all the rehearsals so now I tape them and she never misses a beat. I would highly reccomend this product for all who are in choirs, orchestras and even in business. Tape your meetings and never have to remember what is said....You already have it.
