I had 4 Olympic recorders: VN 120PC, 480PC etc. and love them. Bought VN8100PC for extended record time but can't get the software to appear on my computer! I have 19 files to upload to my PC and no way to do it. Support stepped me thru it once, but after that could not upload again. I do NOT recommend this DVR. Too hard to use and actually, useless to me. I still use the old ones which are super and uncomplicated.

I love my vn-8100pc -- works perfectly
This little machine works very well. Battery life is excellent .. I just changed the batteries after three months. I use it to record jot notes, and to record meetings for others to hear. The quality is great. I have reduced to mp3 48 kbps mono and the quality is still very good. I am very pleased with my recorder.

Worked fine, then it stopped working.
Hello. I bought this 5 months ago to use in meetings. I have kept it in its protective case and have not dropped it or done anything to cause it to malfunction. Like other reviewers have said, this product has all of a sudden stopped working properly. I turn it on, and the screen is now barely viewable, and the last month of meetings I have recorded have not vanished. DO NOT BUY THIS, the risk of it breaking soon after you buy it is too high. Based on only a hand full of reviews, with this many being negative, do yourself a favor and buy a different product.

Started out okay
I purchased this recorder less than a year ago. One evening I attempted to turn it on and it would not work. I thought that maybe the batteries were dead so I replaced them and nothing. I am frustrated because I'm in grad school and really need it but now I'm back to looking for another recorder. I enjoyed it while it worked but I am not sure I'll buy another Olympus.

LOVE THIS PRODUCT
I purchased this product for class lectures. I would have been lost without it. I would advise anybody purchasing to get the external mic for it, otherwise the sound can be garbled. Other than that - this is one of the best purchases I have made since enrolling in school. It is so simple to use and the transfer to computer is a lifesaver. The only downfall is that when you replace the batteries you have to double check the date and time. A small thing compared to no lecture notes!

Too much time to figure out how to use it
The directions make it seem so simple to record - just push the record button. I do and it goes into pause and will not record. There is no trouble shooting guideline and no FAQs. It takes way too much time to figure out and the end result is no sustained recording. Sound is good for the 5 seconds it did record but immediately went into standby mode.

Ok for a while
I bought this recorder 9 months ago for my work as a journalist. It was working fine until a couple of days ago when inexplicably everything started to sound garbled. Not good. Won't make that mistake again.

I bought this recorder to record some of my course lectures and also purchased the external microphone as recommended by another reviewer. Overall the sound quality is good. The microphone needs to be pointed in the director of the speaker to get the best sound. Battery life is very good. The PC download feature is very useful. Voice activated mode is useful when the professor pauses. As mentioned by Court Reporter above, you have to be careful when recorder is in the sleep mode because it seems to be off, but really isn't. One touch of the record button will start recording. Found this out by accident when I left the recorder in my backpack over the weekend and returned to find hours of my roommate's partying recorded on tape. Even with that there was juice still left in the batteries. Recording of music is below average, but there are other devices that are more useful for such.
Overall a very good recorder.
