Overview

With a 25mm focal length and 47 degree angle of view, this lens sits right between wide and telephoto designs, making it a great choice as an all-around lens for your photography. A fast f1.8 circular aperture delivers beautifully soft defocused backgrounds for impressive portraits or when subject emphasis is the desired photographic effect. An inner focusing mechanism assures fast and accurate auto-focusing, and because it is an MSC design, it offers nearly silent focusing operation – a great feature when shooting HD movies.

Another M43 jewel

I won't spend too much time talking about how great this lens does in everything that you expect from a good lens. It literally has no major issues with sharpness, CA, distortion, bokeh, AF speed, color reproduction, or even it's size. I didn't want to give 5 stars, though, because that would mean there'd be no room for improvements, and that's not the case here.

This lens is so great, it's practically clinical and void of any character. I know, I know, this is really reaching and also very subjective, but it's quite true, really. This lens will give you a 50mm FOV image in a technically perfect shot every single time. No disruptive poppy colors, or offensive contrasty images, nothing weird or out of the ordinary. I perfect 5 star image. Every time.

Seriously, though, if this lens were to be weather sealed, what with advent of sealed cameras everywhere, this lens alone would migrate people from systems across the photography world. This is the one thing I would change about this lens. Hell, I can add in my own "character" in post!

Superb, Depending on Purpose

I am an amateur and purchased a standard OMD EM-5 kit with two zoom lenses. My first fixed focal lens was this 25mm f1.8 for low light use and for small depth of field for realizing a good bokeh. This is a superb lens, but I found that the 25mm lens just didn't fit my general needs when used in a confined area to take wall-to-wall shots. While I still use this 25mm lens in more controlled environments, and outdoors, I later purchased the 17mm f1.8 lens which has become my general go-to carry-around fixed focal lens.

Why did I wait so long?

Please keep in mind this is my first prime for micro-4/3 (Olympus) as I have been using old manual lenses. I like the compactness and tight-fitting mount -- better than the plastic/polymer mounts on the other lenses but both are good (14-42mm f3.5 and 40-150mm f4). I notice that the auto settings tend toward the wider aperture (f1.8) even though lighting may be good enough for general openings, say f4. Great colors regardless aperture and/or shutter speed. Manual focusing is easy, maybe more so that on the other lenses.

A good prime lens

Pros: Faster than the 12-40mm f2.8 pro
Relatively cheap
Light, your EM1 feels like a Point and Shoot with this lens
Cons: Sharpness is not better than the f2.8 pro
DOF is not better than the f2.8 pro
Bottom line: if you already own the f2.8 pro, do not buy this one.

I purchased this lens along with the OMD-EM1 and the 12-40mm f2.8 pro. Before I got this lens, I also test the Nikon 50mm f1.4 on the Nikon D750 body. I really enjoy the DOF of the Nikon combination and was hoping to achieve the similar effect by using this prime lens. However, the result was quite disappointed. This lens is just not fast enough to get close the isolation effect like the Nikon combo. It is not much different than the f2.8 pro lens at 40mm. In term of sharpness, it is as good as the f2.8 pro but not better. Now to the pros, it does faster than the f2.8 pro so you do not have to rely on higher ISO to shot indoor photos.

Excellent lens

I bought the M Zuiko 25mm f1.8 about 2 months ago. In that time I have found that the lens is sharp.. sharp.. sharp.. I left the Sony SLT world and jumped to Olympus having Olympus OM 10 Film cameras.
The lens is great. Nice and light. Great for a walk around lens. Nice lens hood. I am impressed with the lens. Great build quality for what its made out of.
I had my reservations about leaving the SLT/DSLR world, but I am so glad I did. Why did I wait so long?

Nifty Fifty in your pocket

If you like the 50mm equivalent focal length on Fullframe cameras and the perspective it gives you then this lens will absolutely satisfy as it is sharp corner to corner when wide open and compact. Its flare resistant, produces nice out of focus blur, and has a neat sunstar pattern when the aperture is stopped down. For what you are getting, the price is worth it. the Package gives you a reversible lens hood that protects the lens body from scratches. The lens cap isn't the greatest but you can always get an aftermarket one.

Bokeh

BOKEH. First, I'm pretty new to photography. I have this mounted on my e-m5 mark ii, and I have barely taken it off. I also have the kit lens - 12-50mm EZ, but it sits in a cloth sack while I lug this around. I'm in love with this lens for street photography. My wife and I have already snapped some great pictures. It's my first time using a prime lens and the F1.8 is incredible for getting some bokeh. I'm really happy with this so far. It focuses pretty quickly. I can't wait to buy more lenses if the quality of all of Olympus's lenses are similar.

My favorite Olympus lens

This is my favorite Olympus lens so far. I love the 50mm equivalent focal length because it's extremely versatile. It is on my OM-D E-M5 practically every day. The autofocus is lightning quick and accurate. It renders images beautifully with excellent contrast. My favorite part is the bokeh - creamy and smooth. The only thing I don't like about it is its build. Very plasticky - even more pronounced in the lens hood. (But I guess I'm just glad Olympus included a lens hood). The focusing ring already has a few dents on it. But that's a minor complaint. I love this lens!

It doesn't get any better

The only lens I can compare this to in a past life is the Nikon 35mm DX f/1.8. Like that bargain it is small, light, fast and scary sharp. Fits in a small pocket and renders fine color and detail. Pair it with an E-M1 in low light and you can take almost any picture; also good on an E-M10.

Great all around lens

With the equivalent focal length of a 50mm in 35mm terms, this lens delivers great sharpness in a standard lens.
