Great kit lens!

This lens came with my E-M5 Elite in a kit. For what I paid it would have been foolish not to get it.
It is a very nice little lens. Image quality is actually quite good. Focus speed is good and it is quiet.
The only drawbacks I would give it are.
1. Plastic lens mount.
2. Does not include lens hood.
In using the lens I have found it to be sharp for a lens in this price point. It is very lightweight and collapses to make it a tiny little package. I would recommend it if you get it in a kit. When it was all said and done, I only paid $20.00 for it. Like I said, it would have been foolish not to get it.

If it is on sale, get it.

You will usually find it at the price of $99-$199 on sale. It is a requirement for every novice photographer, but I don't know exactly for amateurs. It is the type of lens that you will ask yourself why you don't want to use instead of why you should, thus allows novices to question themselves what next lens should they buy. It is quite easy, collapsible, sharp, low barrel distortion, and doesn't produce much chromatic aberrations throughout the whole frame. In addition, it is light and small enough to be carried on any occasion. The only drawback is minimum focus is only 0.25 meters and can not be compensated by buying the macro extension lens from Olympus, despite being expensive relative to the price of the lens itself .

Great kit Lens

Great little kit lens. Very lightweight, compact lens, offering exceptionally fast & sharp auto focus. Super macro to telephoto shots are very sharp and well focused. I have shots of ladybugs on roses, to my sheltie 100 feet away; all have been exceptional. Eventhough it is lightweight, it does not feel cheaply made. I could not be more pleased with this lens.

Surprisingly good kit lens

Lenses that come packaged as part of a camera kit are notorious for sub-par performance and build, but the Zuiko Micro Four Thirds (MTF) 14-42mm IIR is a pleasant surprise. From the limited photos I have taken since receiving the lens, pictures seem to come out crisp, with resolution fairly uniform from center to edge. Zoom is smooth and autofocus is fast.

It is a collapsible lens so when closed it only extends about 2" from the camera body, and weighs a mere 4 ounces. (Contrast this to the 28-85mm (full-frame equivalent to MFT 14-42mm) I have for my old OM-1 - that weighs about a pound and extends 3 1/2" at its shortest.)

The maximum aperture for this lens is an unremarkable F3.5 - 5.6, but that is common for this class of zoom. To upgrade to the Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens would cost 3 times the price of this lens.

This lens also has a very decent minimum focusing distance of just under 10", very nice for taking photos of small objects such as flowers and mushrooms (two of my favorite subjects). All-in-all a very nice lens.

My only caveat is the 37mm filter size, which means it is a tiny lens cap for big fumbling fingers. I have installed a 37-46mm step-up ring to alleviate this problem. 46mm is the filter size for many MFT lenses and I plan on standardizing most of my lenses at 46mm. That way I can share filters between lenses, and the 46mm lens cap is much easier for me to handle.

Probably one of the best kit zooms ever

The M.Zuiko 14-42 II R is a good lens. It's biggest attraction is it's collapsing design. This seemed fiddly and a bit too delicate for a plastic bodied lens, but it has held up well. It's very lightweight, and fairly sharp across the entire range. Autofocus is very quick, and silent enough to be used in movie mode. While it will never rival the 12-40 pro, this lens is a good enough do-anything lens to learn on or travel with.

Good kit lens

Pros
Compact size means you can easily fit an E-M10 body and this lens (separate) in your pocket.
Respectable build and optics quality.
Used it for many months and it served me well from portraits to landscape and even night as well.

Cons
With 3.5 on the fast end I find the bokeh and subject isolation to be a bit lacking for myself (I upgraded to the 12-40 PRO)
Not a fan of the small focus ring due to having larger hands, but the size is proportionate to the M4/3 system.

Quiet zoom lens

Great shots when there is ample light, in dim or low light conditions due to limitations of the E-P2, you'll really need a flash, especially a TTL flash.

Very good "KIT" lens, light, quiet and smooth...

This lens is a great little lens. I have used all types of photo equipment over the last three decades, have owned and used every Olympus film camera and lens in the 'OM' System and this is, though it may cause pain to some to hear this, better than most of the old OM lenses. And they were REALLY good!

I wish the lower end went to 12mm (24mm equivalent on a 35mm system), but MOST photo taking by enthusiasts and even Prosumers can come from this lens and/or the WONDERFUL 12-50 or the other great 9-18. This lens will get you foo the ground and flying with aplomb. I lost the front Bayonet ring and I can't seem to get another one from Olympus no matter how I try to describe it, though, so guard it with your life. The lens looks "funny" without it.

A good "urban" lens

This lens was part of the package I have bought with my EP-3 camera in 2011. With time I have learn to use the M.14-42mm as an urban lens because of its compact size and overall performances.
Picture results were supprisely good but it cannot pretend to be at the same levels as the prime lenses. The 14mm wide setting is sometime too narrow especially for interior uses or contextual picturing.
I recommend you to add the lens hood that give you a more easy way to handhold the M.14-42mm during your picture taking.
Considering the price-point of the lens it is a good starting all-around option for a Pen series model.

Sharp, versatile lens

I purchased on recommendation of a knowledgeable friend when a rare opportunity developed. Weight and bulk was a consideration, and I wanted a better camera & lens to capture the events. This lens did not disappoint me at all! Within its focal range, it provided better images and greater versatility than I expected from a single lens. I'm very pleased, and I recommend it to others. I've since purchased another lens for this system to expand its capabilities, and I intend to purchase others.
