Powerfully Simple:
Introducing the Incredible Olympus PEN E-PL1 CameraThe new Olympus PEN E-PL1 is truly greater than the sum of its parts. This surprisingly small camera body is packed with technology normally found in bigger, bulkier cameras and High Definition (HD) camcorders. With features like interchangeable lenses, the new Live Guide and one-touch HD video — the E-PL1 is an easy-to-use and portable all-in-one package that travels with you to capture all the details of your life.
Popular accessories for the E-PL1
EASE-OF-USE
NEW DIRECT BUTTON FOR HD MOVIES.
Recording HD movies with the E-PL1 is simple thanks to an easy-to-reach red "direct button" (red record button) on the back of the camera body. If you're about to snap a photo and you realize a video would capture the spirit of the scene even better, simply press the record button and instantly you're capturing videos! Easily toggle back and forth between capturing stills and video by using your index finger to press the shutter button or your thumb to press the red record button. Having the ability to shoot still images and videos opens up a world of imaging possibilities.
NEW easy-to-use LIVE GUIDE SETS THE SCENE BEFORE YOU SHOOT.
The E-PL1's Live Guide simplifies great photography and gets the results you desire at the touch of a button. Want a brighter or darker subject, or a sharper or softer background? Want more vivid or muted color in your shot? Want warmer or cooler tones? Simply press ok while in iAuto, select Live Guide and press up or down arrows on the back of the camera to slide through all these photographic effects on the LCD and make adjustments before snapping the shot. Forget about learning technical things like f-stops, shutter speed and white balance, and jump right in by composing, adjusting exposure and more within your scene before the shot is taken. Helpful tips for photographing children, pets, flowers and more are also available.

NEW POP-UP FLASH.
The E-PL1 is the first camera in the Olympus PEN series with a built-in pop-up flash that makes it easy to illuminate low-light subjects, reduce red eye, and fill in dark areas. The camera is also compatible with a range of optional external flashes including the Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R that can be controlled wirelessly by the E-PL1, so you can dynamically control lighting.
iAUTO AND iENHANCE.
The iAuto mode automatically identifies what you're shooting and adjusts settings for you to capture the best result depending on the situation. With iEnhance the warm yellow and orange colors of a sunset are heightened to a dramatically lifelike color that's truer to what you see with the naked eye. iEnhance can be used in any mode, and automatically engages when in iAuto to enrich color in any subject.
19 SCENE-SELECT MODES.
From portraits to sunset shots, the E-PL1 is equipped with 19 Scene-Select modes for effortless picture taking, including Fireworks, Sunset, Children, Macro and Panorama, to name a few. Capturing beautiful portraits is easy with the ePortrait Mode that enables you to smooth your subject's complexion.
CREATIVE FREEDOM
EXPAND YOUR CREATIVE HORIZONS WITH BUILT-IN EFFECTS.
Olympus appreciates that you may not have hours to spend retouching your images on the computer. The E-PL1 has six in-camera Art Filters, including a new filter called Gentle Sepia. This filter gives your images and videos a soft warm sepia cast similar to historical images from the early days of photography, and joins Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pin Hole, Grainy Film and Diorama (the filter that makes everything look as small as the E-PL1). With the E-PL1's Multiple Exposure function available for still image capture, you are free to tell a visual story your way. The image capture options enable you to shoot one shot, then another and combine them in real time, or capture both shots separately and combine them within the camera later.

EXPAND YOUR CREATIVE HORIZONS WITH BUILT-IN EFFECTS.
Get more out of the E-PL1 with an expanded line of exclusive Micro Four Thirds lenses that deliver uncompromising image quality and brightness in a compact package. A variety of cases and accessories are available, and an adapter lets you use standard Four Thirds lenses.
IN-CAMERA SLIDESHOW WITH SOUND.
Slideshows have never been easier or more fun to create. The E-PL1's enhanced playback functions allow you to employ effective fade-in/fade-out techniques, control the movie/still mix and speed, add captivating musical soundtracks, and much more.
PROFESSIONAL IMAGE QUALITY
BIG SENSOR, NOT A BIG BODY.
At the heart of the E-PL1 is a large-size image sensor that's the same sensor as the one inside the Olympus E-30 and E-620 Digital SLR models. The only difference between this sensor and what the pros use is that this big sensor is inside the much smaller body of the E-PL1. This high-performance 12.3-megapixel Live MOS image sensor (8 times larger than the average point-and-shoot camera sensor) delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity, and state-of-the-art technology to reduce noise and capture fine image details in both highlight and shadow areas.

STABILIZE ALL OF YOUR LENSES.
Instead of selling more expensive lenses that have image stabilization inside them, Olympus takes a different approach by having image stabilization built right into the body of the E-PL1. That means that any lens attached to the E-PL1 will deliver blur-free images thanks to three modes of In-body Image Stabilization that automatically compensate for camera shake in low light or when shooting without a tripod. Since the PEN cameras are the world's smallest interchangeable lens cameras with In-body Image Stabilization, you'll feel comfortable taking the E-PL1 on the road with you to capture the action.
TruePic V IMAGE PROCESSOR.
In addition to more detail, the image sensor, combined with the next-generation TruePic V Image Processor, delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity and reduced noise, all the way up to 3200 ISO.

HD MOVIE WITH MANUAL CONTROL, ART FILTER MOVIE, AND NEW DIRECT MOVIE BUTTON
Shoot movies at 30 frames per second, with high-quality sound, in 720p with available manual control over aperture and shutter speed. This new level of control allows you to express your vision exactly how you want in your HD videos. A Direct HD Movie Button switches you from still to movie mode with the press of a button. You can also capture HD video (720p) using one of the six Art Filters for more creative shooting options.
NEW EASY-TO USE-LIVE GUIDE CONTROL
Seeing the results before you shoot can change the way you take a picture. Want more vivid or muted color in your shot? Want warmer or cooler hues? Want a brighter or darker subject, or a sharper or softer background? Or maybe you want to capture the fast-moving action of your subject with a little artistic blur, or perhaps freeze the action? Simply set the camera to iAuto, press OK to engage Live Guide, then press the up and down arrows on the back of the E-PL1 to easily slide through numerous photographic effects. Make adjustments and watch the LCD as the effects are made live -- before the image is captured! Live Guide also features a Tips section on how to compose a shot or shoot kids, pets, flowers and more.
BUILT-IN FLASH
Use the pop-up flash to easily illuminate low-light subjects. The camera is also compatible with a range of optional external flashes including the Olympus FL-14, -- and the E-PL1 has wireless flash control using the FL-36R and FL-50R -- for dynamic lighting control.
IN-CAMERA ART FILTERS
With six in-camera Art Filters (Pop Art, Soft Focus, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama and our new Gentle Sepia filter) you can explore your artistic side while taking both still shots and HD video. The Art Filters can be applied as you shoot, no additional software required.
12.3 MEGAPIXEL
The E-PL1’s powerful 12.3 megapixel Live-MOS sensor packs a powerful high-quality imaging punch for such a compact camera, allowing you to capture more detail than ever before. The Live MOS image sensor delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity and fine image details in both highlight and shadow areas.
IN-BODY IMAGE STABILIZATION
Say goodbye to blurry images. In both still and movie modes - the E-PL1 Image Stabilization excels. The E-PL1’s three-mode In-body Image Stabilization system compensates for up to three shutter speed steps in the still shooting modes with any of its interchangeable lenses: Mode 1 for general shooting, Mode 2 for creative high-speed horizontal capture, and Mode 3 for high-speed vertical capture. The camera's Mechanical Image Stabilization automatically compensates for camera shake in low-light situations or when using a telephoto lens. In the Movie Modes the advanced Electronic Image Stabilization tracts the images both vertically and horizontally to achieve clear sharp movies, matching the performance of the in body IS.
COMPACT SIZE, INTERCHANGEABLE LENSES
We’ve packed a big sensor into a small camera. The stylish design of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 is much more compact than a traditional DSLR, but it still provides the option of interchangeable lenses -- giving you the freedom to take great pictures wherever you go. Whether it’s around the block or around the world.
IN-CAMERA SLIDESHOW WITH SOUND
Slideshows have never been easier or more fun to create. The E-PL1’s enhanced playback functions allow you to employ effective fade-in/fade-out techniques, control the movie/still mix and speed, add captivating musical soundtracks, and much more.
MULTIPLE EXPOSURE
Multiple Exposure makes heightened creativity an easily-obtained objective. Two frames can be combined to create an image uniquely yours. Images can be combined in playback mode or directly on the LCD
IAUTO WITH IENHANCE
iAuto automatically identifies the scene you're shooting – portrait, landscape, night portrait, macro, or sport – and adjusts the settings to optimize results. iEnhance can be used in any mode, and automatically engages when using iAuto to enrich color in any subject, just as the human eye sees it.
TRUEPIC V IMAGE PROCESSOR
In addition to more detail, the image sensor, combined with the next-generation TruePic V Image Processor, delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity and reduced noise, all the way up to 3200 ISO.
19 AUTOMATIC SCENE-SELECT MODES
The E-PL1 is equipped with 19 scene-select modes for effortless picture taking. Standard scene modes like Night-Scene, Portrait and Landscape are easy-to-use solutions for everyday shooting.
DUST REDUCTION SYSTEM
A Dust Reduction System assures spot-free images. Every time you turn on the camera, the patented Supersonic Wave Filter silently vibrates, flinging and collecting dust so that it cannot interfere with the picture imaging at any time.
AF LIVE VIEW WITH AF TRACKING
AF Live View works as seamlessly as a point-and-shoot to display subjects, in focus, on the LCD the instant the shutter is pressed half way. AF Tracking locks your subject into focus right on the LCD, and constantly adjusts focus and brightness whether you or your subject is moving. With this mode, a simple push of the AF button and shutter release enables you to keep fast-moving and unpredictable subjects in focus
IN-CAMERA EDITING
Make changes to your image after the shot, right in the camera. Adjust for red eye, crop an image, change the aspect ratio or saturation, change your image to black and white -- and much more! In-Camera jpeg edit functions allow you to quickly tweak your images right in the camera so you can easily upload them to your favorite web site and share them with friends and family. (perfect!)
FACE DETECTION
A Face Detection function reduces the chance of blurry faces when shooting groups of people—up to eight subjects at once—even if they're moving while you're pressing the shutter button.
SHADOW ADJUSTMENT TECHNOLOGY
Shadow Adjustment Technology corrects for extreme light variations with high-tech efficiency. It can also be used in post-editing.
EPORTRAIT
The ePortrait Scene-Select mode is useful for smoothing out the facial features of your subjects, which is a tremendous plus for High Definition video playback, or apply ePortrait post shot via .jpeg edit.
MULTIPLE ASPECT RATIO SHOOTING
The E-PL1 lets you select one of four Aspect Ratios (4:3, 3.2, 16.9 and 6.6) that help frame your images to whatever proportions you'd like. Aspect ratios are available for still photo and HD movie capture, for everything from conventional enlargements to viewing on widescreen monitors.
ACCESSORY PORT
The E-PL1 includes a port for new accessories including the SEMA-1 Microphone adapter set and the VF-2 live-finder, a detachable electronic viewfinder. The viewfinder easily slides onto the camera's accessory port and hot shoe to provide 1.15x magnification for a 100% field of view. The VF-2 rotates up 90 degrees which is useful when shooting subjects from challenging angles. The external accessory port also allows for connection with the new EMA-1 external microphone adapter for enhanced audio capture.
MICRO FOUR THIRDS MOUNT
The Micro Four Thirds Mount on the E-PL1 provides many key benefits, including the effectiveness of a digitally designed image sensor, an ultra-compact design, and expandability and compatibility with all Micro Four Thirds Lenses and Four Thirds System Lens via the MMF-2 Adapter.
SDHC MEDIA CARDS
The E-PL1 is capable of recording video to SDHC media cards to accommodate large files. (SDHC Class 6 cards are recommended.) Videos, stills and high-fidelity audio can also be output via HDMI cable-direct to any HD television.
UNDERWATER HOUSING
The new camera’s compact design makes it the perfect companion for all of your dive trips. The PT-EP01 underwater housing has been specially customized for the Olympus E-PL1 and is waterproof to a depth of 40 meters (approximately 130 feet). With its durable, high-quality polycarbonate construction, this Olympus housing protects the camera from water while also cushioning it from knocks and bumps on land.

Great Camera!
Overall it's a great camera. However, one thing I do not like is that when I zoom into portraits I don't have a clear image. It looks grainy. Other than that the camera is great!

This camera is just excellent.
The E-PL1 is a great combination of ease of use, tremendous picture quality, simple yet powerful features and value. The camera has a long battery life, takes pictuers rapidly and has a solid construction without being bulky. I wanted a camera upgraded from my simple point n shoot ones yet not priced into the high hundreds of dollars.

Fantastic Digital Back
I have been using this camera for almost two years now, primarily as a digital back for my lenses from a high end film rangefinder camera I have owned for many years. I have shot everthing from weddings, to mountain tops to under the sea with this camera and the approproate accesories.
It was a very good camera at its introductory price, and is a downright steal at its current price. Out of camera JPEG image quality with a good lens attached is as good or better than a mid range crop sensor dSLR. The kit lens is better than the kit lens of most entry level dSLR cameras and focuses closer too. If you have the 17mm f/2.8 lens and the 40-150mm zoom (a suprisingly good lens for the price) you could probably travel the world with just those two lenses and a polarizing filter. However, if you have any old lenses, or access to them this camera will stabilize them (IBIS really works!)and then it really shines. If you are looking for blisteringly fast tracking auto-focus (think Johny's soccer game) you would be better off with a mid level dSLR. For everything else, this camera is just as good image wise and is much more compact. If you have an eye for composition (or the desire to learn) and put some good lenses on this camera you absolutely can achieve professional results.
ISO is good from 200-1600 for color, up to 3200 for B&W. Noise looks like film grain and is not splotchy.
Utimaltely, compared to a dSLR it is a lot more fun becuase it is never a chore to take with you, it doesn't intimidate people and it has all the functionaltiy and customizability of a professional camera if you want it. It can also be a point and shoot if you want it to as well.
For those of you who are moving up from a small sensor point and shoot where everything is almost always in the depth of field of the lens, be aware that this large sensored camera will have a much narrower DOF unless you stop the lens down. While this is a desirable feature because it is controlable, it is something you need to be aware of. -

This camera was bought specifically for a trip to the Outer Hebrides. I wanted a camera that did more than a typical point and shoot.
There is a bit of a learning curve and the manual is not terribly clear on some points. With the help of Olympus Pen cameras for Dummies this problem was rectified.
I learned enough to handle auto shooting, Art and Scene modes with some dexterity. I found the camera easy to switch back and forth between these modes.
What I liked ... the small size; interchangable lens; Art and scene shooting. The battery life was excelleent and recharged quickly.
The pictures I took were very good and I have received compliments on them. Some of these photos having been shot with the pop-art setting have stunned those I have showed them to.
I look forward to learning the rest of the camera features. -

This 4/3 camera is great.
I took the camera with two Lenses and took pictures at Presque Isle and Erie Zoo. Using the manual mode ..... Mostly aperture preferred, I got excellent photos of sail boats, and speed boats with their occupants. At the zoo, I got almost perfect photos, I ran mostly 400 iOS. I love the ergonomics of the camera and the Olympic photo program.

You Need Viewfinder
I wanted to have the control over settings, interchangable lenses, some advanced features, and portable. I have used point and shoots(P&S) and single lens reflex (SLR) in the past. I really made a decision of which camera to use based on where I was going. Out with friends, taking indoor shots, take my P&S, it was handy. Going to take pictures important, SLR. These general rules were very constricting.. Then these hybrids came out. Perfect. Now I always carry my Olympus pen E-pl1. It was good but I missed having a viewfinder. The LCD is OK but outside or at many typical angles you shoot it just did not work well. After some study I found the viewfinders available were Olympus VF-2 and VF-3. The advantage to VF-2 was better optics, but it did not have a locking mechanism in the shoe. The VF-3 optics were not as good but it had locking, oh and it was less money. Which one did I get, the VF-2 of course. Optics trumps always. Well, the critics were right about the locking feature being needed. I figured out to use a lanyard you put on your lens.

Disappointed in faulty lens
I like the camera but disappointed that the lens front element is loose and turns when I attach a filter. I don't know if that is going to be the ruination of it or not.
There is also a spot on the front element of the lens where the multi-coating is missing. This is a new camera and lens and I have to go to the bother of packaging and shipping the lens back to Olympus not knowing if I will get someone's old refurbished lens back. -

Overall a very good camera
I am not a camera person but I needed to take some photos for a contest that I enter often. This camera takes a very good picture but I still don't know how to really use it.
Picture quality is sharp with good color, something I could not get with my point and shoot.
The one thing that really bugs me is the placement of the record button. My hands are not that big but the button is directly under my thumb and it gets pushed all to often.
The camera is also slow. It might be me but sometimes I want to take more than one photo and it takes forever to come online again.
And a major drawback that you will not get with a SLR is not being able to see the screen in bright light.
Some day I will try to learn some of the features.
